Project Title:
China National Grid Project

Project Description:
The Systems Research Group of the Department of CSIS has been awarded with a grant for an R&D project entitled the "Hong Kong University Grid Point" under the China National Grid Project (CNGrid). The project will last for three years, from November 2002 to November 2005.

The project aims at constructing a 5 Tflop/s high performance grid test bed across ten institutions and universities in China. Topic R&D areas range from building system software, development environment, to the portal support that are customized for grid platforms. The grid test bed, upon completion, will be used for supporting various kinds of computationally demanding applications for meteorology, manufacturing, environment and resource planning, and scientific computations.

The HKU Gideon 300 cluster (Linpack 355 Gflops, ranked #175 in TOP500 Supercomputer list 11/2002) will be used as one of the CNGrid grid points for the development of grid middleware and evaluation of various grid applications developed under the 863 projects. We will collaborate with the partners in the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in developing a grid middleware, called G-JavaMPI.

Project Significance and Results Achieved:
  • We are glad to be the first institute outside Mainland China that participates in the project, which also represents the first-time collaboration between the HKU Faculty of Engineering and the National High Technology Development Program of China (The 863 Program).
  • By initiating R&D efforts in the grid computing area and promoting the benefits of grid technologies, the project will ultimately facilitate the technological advancement both within China and HK.
