Seasonal Climate Forecast

lhqiu - Posted on 26 February 2016

Project Description:

Climate predictability in seasonal to interannual scale has been verified to be possible. Many climate modes, like El Niño/La Niña-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), Arctic Oscillation (AO), Antarctic Oscillation (AAO), and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), are found to display significant contribution to climate forecasting in different regions (the study focused on seasonal precipitation prediction). However, current forecast skills remains large space to be improved. In the study, it is assumed that climate variation in one region may cause obvious alteration in certain climate modes, and these modes could be vital for seasonal precipitation forecast. Different climate modes in different regions were detected to draw critical relationship with precipitation, aiming to reveal key regions for precipitation forecast in different regions. The effort is designed to reveal the possible climate change mechanism and enhance forecast skills in seasonal precipitation forecast.
