Project Description:

This project aims at developing a computational tool/approach within the framework of CFD, DEM, and coupled CFD-DEM algorithm. The major computational platforms, which are open-source, include OpenFOAM, LIGGGHTS, and CFDEM. Non-Newtonian fluids will be the major concern during the code development, such as Bingham fluid which exists widely in nature. New drag-force model will be developed as well. Other applications of the code on, such as grouting activities in geotechnics, will be carried out as well.

Research Project Details
Project Duration:
11/2016 to 7/2017
Project Significance:
A computational platform incorporating CFD and DEM (hopefully FEM, depending on the development progress) will be developed. The code can be applied in various areas, including but not limited to debris flow, ground treatment in geotechnics, and concrete pumping. It will be a fundamental work for future research in both industrial problem and natural process.
Remarks:
As DEM simulation requires huge computational resource, PC or workstation is not the best option. The computational ability of the clusters will greatly enhance the efficiency of the code development and relevant simulations.
